A Parent’s Guide to Vaccination

To control and prevent the spread of infectious diseases, Ontario’s Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA) requires parents to provide Toronto Public Health (TPH) with proof of their child’s immunization against nine diseases (diphtheria, measles, mumps, polio, rubella, tetanus, chickenpox, meningococcal, pertussis and varicella).

The role of TPH in this program is to ensure high vaccine coverage rates through enforcement of the ISPA legislation and ultimately to protect everyone from these diseases. Toronto Public Health works with families to ensure children are up to date. Students without the required vaccines will receive a letter from TPH asking for updated immunization information. To avoid school suspension, it is the parent’s responsibility to update their child’s immunization record or provide a valid exemption form to TPH. All the vaccines required for school attendance are publicly funded.
