I have recently focused my attention on decreasing the speed limit along Avenue Road between Lawrence Avenue and Eglinton. Reducing the speed limit would help protect children who walk along, or cross Avenue to attend one of the eight schools, preschools and daycares along this stretch of the road. Both Allenby and Marshall McLuhan are surrounded by flashing speed limit signs, but they are only in operation between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. As early morning programs and extracurricular activities occur outside of these hours, drivers are not always reminded to slow down in these school areas. It is important to ensure that cars are travelling at safe speeds at all times.
On February 22nd, I brought the issue to the North York Community Council, motioning that the speed limit be reduced from 50 km to 40 km. My motion was deferred in order to hold public consultation on speed limits and alternate solutions, with our ward’s residents and Transportation Services staff. The dates for this consultation will be announced in the near future.
