Avenue Road Traffic Safety Update

I have been hard at work focused on improving traffic and pedestrian safety across the Avenue Road corridor between Eglinton and Lawrence. We have all seen far too many avoidable tragedies, often inflicting our children and our seniors. That is why I successfully fought to introduce the ‘watch your speed program’ in the Avenue and Castlefield area (in front of Allenby Junior Public School), banned dangerous turn movements and installed pedestrian-street barriers.

I have been working over the summer to ensure safety across the Avenue Corridor – including the consideration of additional traffic calming measures, banning dangerous turn movements and adding painted pedestrian crossing lines. In September, I will work to designate the portion of Avenue Rd from Lawrence to Eglinton as a Pedestrian Safety Corridor, reducing speed to 40KM / hour and narrowing traffic lanes to slow vehicles down. Moreover, following my request to Toronto Police Services 53 Division, additional enforcement will be present on the Avenue Road Corridor.

As your Councillor, as a parent and resident, it is increasingly clear that reckless driving and speeding vehicles are putting our families at risk. I will not tolerate this new reality taking hold across the GTA. I will continue to advance these objectives at City Hall, in partnership with our schools and at North York Community Council, with the aim to improve education, enforcement and environmental changes that lead to safer streets, school zones and residential streets along the entire Avenue corridor.
