Standing-Up for Literacy and Common Sense

Over the last year  multiple residents have placed a ‘little lending library’ in front of their properties to encourage the sharing of books within their communities.  Currently, if the structure is permanent, it is illegal under the City of Toronto Municipal Code (Chapter 743).

You may have heard of local resident and literature enthusiast George Sherwood, who recently received an order from the City of Toronto threatening to fine him if he did not remove his ‘little lending library’.

I believe common sense must prevail. That is why I spoke with Mayor Tory on this matter, and together, we have asked the City to end this practice. This week, I brought forward a motion, seconded by Mayor Tory, requesting the City to permit ‘little lending libraries’.
