Partially automated vehicles are already in use on our streets; these vehicles include features like cruise control, automated braking and automated parking systems. The next waive of technology includes highly automated driverless/ autonomous cars. These are being tested on public roads in Ontario today and will reshape our transportation system. At the January meeting of Public Works and Infrastructure Committee, I was glad to request that the General Manager, Transportation Services, report back with a comprehensive Automated Vehicle Tactical Plan. We need to prepare for the changes that are coming and understand the potential impacts that autonomous vehicles might have on our roads and our residents. Once this request is approved at City Council, the plan will be brought forward in the first quarter of 2019. For a look at the request please see Preparing the City of Toronto for Automated Vehicles.
