Using Technology for Enforcement

The Toronto Police Service Operating Budget was approved at over $1B for 2016. The City of Toronto needs to find ways to rein in the budget while ensuring that service levels remain the same. Last week Mayor Tory asked the Premier to allow for the use of technology in place of uniform police officers. The City would be able to replace expensive, highly trained officers, with cameras for some enforcement related activities. This change would allow for electronic enforcement in certain areas such as school zones. Traffic cameras would be used to issue drivers fines for non- compliance to posted speed limits, stop signs or illegal turns.

Do you support the use of cameras to issue fines for traffic related offences?
